Writer’s Digest has a section up on writing exercises, or prompts as most people call them. Personally I think prompts are more an actor’s thing (like bananas) and you should really know about what you want to write and outline it twenty times before finally giving in and beginning the actual writing. But I do think random “what if” statements make great exercises for producing little remnant scraps you can use later when you’re fixing the hole you happened not to see before in all that outlining.

Still, every once in a while some incredible scene will pop into your head, and yes, you’d be a fool not to write it down. Just ask Martha.

“I am still determined to be cheerful and happy, in whatever situation I may be; for I have also learned from experience that the greater part of our happiness or misery depends upon our dispositions, and not upon our circumstances.” – Martha Washington

“I think I am more like a state prisoner than anything else, there is certain bounds set for me which I must not depart from…” – Martha Washington
